Island Institute Mission Statement
The Island Institute is a non-profit organization that serves as a voice for the balanced future of the islands and waters of the Gulf of Maine. We are guided by an island ethic which recognizes the strength and fragility of Maine's island communities and the finite nature of the Gulf of Maine's ecosystems.
Along the Maine coast, the Island Institute seeks to:
- support the islands' communities;
- conserve Maine's island and marine biodiversity for future generations;
- develop model solutions that balance the needs of the coast's cultural and natural communities;
- provide opportunities for discussion over responsible use of finite resources, and information so competing interests arrive at constructive solutions.
The Island Institute carries out these goals through publications, education, and community service, as well as marine resource and stewardship programs.
"Generations will regard this organization with awe for their foresight and dedication in preserving critical parts of the Maine Coast. It has passed from a luxury to a necessity to make sure this dedicated group continues and expands its work. There is no organization more important for the coast of Maine." --Haywood G. May, President, Bass Harbor MarineLearn more about the Island Institute."Some of the best news and clearest evidence pointing to the robust strength of the conservation ethic continues to come from private non-profit organizations working at local and regional levels. Citizen run groups like the Island Institute are flourishing, turning problems into opportunities." --Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Past President, National Geographic Society
